About YCA

The YCA has also influenced the delivery of a range of services by working in partnership with mainstream providers and voluntary and community sector organisations to deliver specialist services for the Yemeni and Arabic speaking communities in Sheffield. The organisation has also worked to take up wider BME concerns, e.g. culturally appropriate day care for BME elders and worked with other BME organisations and the Tenant Associations in Firth Park Shiregreen to enhance support for young people across the area.

A registered charity and company limited by guarantee, YCA aims to advance education and relieve poverty among Sheffield’s disadvantaged communities, focusing on ‘social’ services such as welfare advice, educational services such as study support and, its specialist ESOL provision. Community participation and community cohesion are very high on the list of priorities.

The Yemeni Community Association Sheffield (YCA) was established in the 1980's to support the Yemeni community. During this time there was a radical cut in employment within the steel industry which led to high unemployment rates.

Many members of the Yemeni community were hindered, both by their lack of English and with the struggle to adapt to the changes in their lives.

A survey carried out by the Sheffield College (2003) estimated that there 5537 Yemeni's in Sheffield.
